denkmal 2020: A Wealth of Cultural Heritage in an Exhibition and Conference Programme
This year's denkmal will take place as planned from 5 to 7 November 2020 at the Leipzig Trade Fair. In spite of the ongoing corona pandemic, the industry is very enthusiastic. Many national and international exhibitors have registered and the conference programme features high-calibre events covering a wide range of topics from the fields of monument preservation and restoration. A hygiene concept has been tailored especially for denkmal to ensure the health and safety of all those involved.
Although denkmal will be a little smaller than usual this year due to the pandemic, many companies have confirmed their participation. Even in this difficult year, visitors will still be able to engage with the entire spectrum of monument preservation and restoration.
Exhibitors include: all-color F. Windisch, Arbortech, Attenberger Bodenziegel, Beeck'sche Farbwerke, Glashütte Lamberts, Golem-Kunst und Baukeramik, HAGA, Hiss Reet, Hollerung Restaurierung, Holzmanufaktur Rottweil, Kreidezeit Naturfarben, Kremer Pigmente, PERI, Remmers, STEICO and Xella. On the international front, companies from Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland have already registered.
Among the craftsman exhibitors are Bennert, one of the largest companies for the preservation and restoration of monuments and buildings in Europe, the historic building specialists from Kramp & Kramp as well as Nüthen Restaurierungen, who are dedicated to the conservation and restoration of plaster, stucco and paintwork. Special tools are available at F.W. Rosenbach's stand. Companies Paul Lorenz and GLR Rothkegel will be showing off their expertise in the field of lighting.
Various associations and institutions have long been important partners of denkmal. The Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (DSD) ("German Foundation for Monument Protection"), the Vereinigung der Landesdenkmalpfleger (VdL) ("Association of Regional Monument Preservationists") and the Verband der Restauratoren ("Restorers Association") will all be represented at denkmal 2020. The Bundesverband Deutscher Steinmetze (BIV) ("German Association of Stonemasons") will also have a stand and will once again be awarding the Peter Parler Prize at denkmal.
Lehmbau Trade Fair: Experience the Variety of Historical Building Materials
The Lehmbau trade fair has been an integral part of denkmal since 2004. Visitors can acquaint themselves up close with the traditional building material and modern loam building techniques and learn about their many different applications. This year will once again feature our tried and true cooperation with the Dachverband Lehm. Many manufacturers of loam building materials have registered, and training and further education institutions will also be exhibiting on the Handwerkerstraße. The Dachverband Lehm itself will again be setting up its information stand and, in addition to a presentation on loam as a building material, will also provide information on the latest standards, environmental product declarations and educational opportunities in loam construction. Among the innovative new products on display is a wide range of loam construction panels with and without heating elements in various formats and designs. The field of creative surface design will also be presented with a wide range of loam plasters, paints, coatings and thin-layer finishes.
Conference Programme: Exciting Events Focusing on the Preservation and Restoration of Historical Monuments
The diverse conference programme makes denkmal the most comprehensive further education platform in the entire industry. Although there will be slightly fewer events this year due to the pandemic, visitors can still look forward to a rich programme of lectures, workshops, conferences, meetings, discussions and award ceremonies.
Among the highlights are three major events with international participation. ICOMOS Germany, the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and the Association of the State Archaeologists of the Federal Republic of Germany (VLA) are organising the symposium "Archaeological World Heritage Sites - Cross-border Conservation, Communication, Cooperation", focussing on the challenges and opportunities of preserving and reconstructing archaeological World Heritage sites. Denkmal 2020 will also feature the two-day event "Communicating World Heritage", organised by the Saxon Ministry for Regional Development (SMR), the German Commission for UNESCO (DUK) and ICOMOS Deutschland. Furthermore, the International Association for Science and Technology of Building Maintenance and Monuments Preservation (WTA) will be holding their general assembly as part of denkmal 2020.
A number of other associations will also be taking part in events. The Bund Heimat und Umwelt (BHU) ("Association of Homeland and Environment") is organising the German Forum for Building Culture and Monument Preservation, the Dachverband der Restauratoren im Handwerk (VRH) ("Association of Craftsman Restorers"), which was newly founded two years ago, is holding its general meeting and the Verband der Restauratoren (VDR) ("Association of Restorers") is holding a specialist conference on the series "Mit Kalkül" ("With Calculus"). There will also be a joint event and a panel discussion with the Association of State Monument Conservators (VdL), the Fraunhofer Information Center for Regional Planning and Building Construction (IRB) and the International Association for Science and Technology of Building Maintenance and Monuments Preservation (WTA), while the Bundesverband Deutscher Steinmetze (BIV) ("German Association of Stonemasons") will be holding a seminar on stonemasonry.
Some exhibitors invite visitors to benefit from their expertise not only at their stand but also within the conference programme: CLAYTEC are once again organising their "Fachwerk Symposium" and Xella will be devoting a specialist seminar to energy efficiency upgrading of listed and existing buildings and the possibilities for funding such projects. HTWK Leipzig is hosting the Forum Bauwerksinformation.
Award Ceremonies At denkmal: Credit Where Credit Is Due
An important component of the conference programme at denkmal are the various awards ceremonies honouring commitment to all aspects of monument preservation and restoration - above all, the presentation of denkmal gold medals for outstanding achievements in monument preservation in Europe. This year another ten exhibitors can look forward to the coveted award. In addition, the Fair Academy colloquium will feature an awards ceremony for the three best designs from the student architecture competition. Furthermore, for the second time since 2018, the renowned Peter Parler Prize will be awarded. This prize honours the outstanding stonemasonry skills performed by independent master stonemasons and sculptors.
The winners of the Saxon city competition will be announced at the closing event "Ab in die Mitte". The Saxon State Ministry of Economics, Labour and Transport (SMWA) and the Saxon State Ministry for Regional Development (SMR) is holding a competition to find creative ideas for Saxony's inner cities and local centres, with prize money of 100,000 euros.
CONTACT Cooperation Exchange: Analogue and Digital
Cooperation with business partners often proves to be the key to success in international business, especially for small and medium-sized companies. Targeted networking is often the first step towards generating new business ideas and orders. The Leipzig Chamber of Skilled Crafts, together with Leipziger Messe and the Dresden Chamber of Skilled Crafts, are therefore jointly organising this year's edition of the international cooperation exchange CONTACT "denkmal" on 6 November 2020 as part of denkmal 2020. This time, the exchange will take on an expanded form, as it will be held in virtual format parallel to the on-site event. International guests, who are unable to attend the event in Leipzig, still have the opportunity to take part via video link. Exhibitors and trade visitors will also have the opportunity to present themselves on an online platform in the run-up to denkmal. Short thematic tours of the denkmal exhibitors will be organised for international guests on 6 November 2020. Registration for CONTACT "denkmal" closes on 30 September 2020.
Hygiene Concept for the Health and Safety of Visitors and Exhibitors
The Leipziger Messe Hygiene Concept, which has been tailored to denkmal and includes various protective measures, ensures the health and safety of everyone involved during the corona pandemic. The concept is based on current recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute and has already been reviewed and approved by the responsible health authority of the City of Leipzig.
denkmal, Europe's leading trade fair for conservation, restoration and old building renovation, presents products and services in all areas of repair, inventory, conservation, restoration, renovation and reconstruction. It has been held biannually since 1994 and invites the international industry to the Leipzig Convention Centre. In addition to the interdisciplinary exhibitor mix, visitors to the trade fair can expect a high-calibre, international conference programme. 447 exhibitors from 19 countries showcased products and services at denkmal 2018. The conference programme featured around 200 events catering to an interested audience. The 13th edition of the trade fair attracted 14,200 visitors (together with MUTEC). The international trade fair for museum and exhibition technology MUTEC and the trade fair Lehmbau take place at the same time as denkmal.
